Gstaad

Surrounded by a crown of majestic Swiss Alps, Gstaad, is collectively known as the German-speaking cluster of 10 chalet villages. Despite its craggy environs, the valley itself has a welcoming elevation–roughly 3,600 feet (1100 meters) above sea level. ABLÄNDSCHEN

The idyllic small chalet village of Abländschen has the highest elevation, 4,300 feet above sea level. It is dominated by the limestone cliffs of the Gastlosen ridge. The area is popular with hikers, cyclists, and climbing enthusiasts. There are more than 30 well-prepared winter hiking routes around Gstaad, and due to Abländschen’s high elevation, it is easy to reach pink and red signposts of winter hiking routes. Along the way, plenty of welcoming restaurants welcome you to grab a bite to eat and recharge your batteries.

ZWEISIMMEN

Zweisimmen (3,000 feet above sea level) is the eastern gateway to the Gstaad region. The village is the entrance to the region's largest ski area — the access to 65 miles of ski slopes, a snowpark, and a ski cross directly from the center of the village. Other highlights include attractive hiking areas within reach, circling picturesque Lake Seeberg above the chalet village. Zweisimmen has already served as the venue for the Swiss cross-country skiing championships and has the Sparenmoos cross-country ski trail above it. The village also offers a wide range of shopping opportunities in its traffic-calmed center. The medieval parish church, the Obersimmentaler Heimathaus, and the Caste Trail showcase history and tradition in a very compact space. It is also the starting point of the MOB, the famous railway line whose panoramic trains cross magnificent landscapes connecting Montreux to the Bernese Oberland.

SAANENMÖSER

The sun-soaked chalet village of Saanenmöser is at the same height as the pass that connects Zweisimmen and Saanen, i.e., 4,100 feet above sea level. Winter and summer sports enthusiasts will find many leisure facilities here. In winter, mountain railways access the region's largest ski area directly from the center of the village. Directly adjacent to the railway station and right in the heart of the village is Gstaad's natural ice rink. The area's golf course is only a few minutes drive above the village.

SCHÖNRIED

The village is nestled between its local mountain, the Horneggli, and Rellerli, on the sun terrace. It is a paradise for nature lovers as well as winter and summer sports enthusiasts. A mountain railway accesses the Horneggli Mountain direct from the village center. In winter, Schönried offers direct access to the largest ski area in the region and a cross-country skiing paradise. It is also a gateway for high-altitude hiking trails. The village square was named after Mike von Grünigen, the local multiple world champion, Olympic medallist, and World Cup overall winner in giant slalom commemorating the milestones of success in his unique sporting career. SAANEN VILLAGE

​​The village of Saanen, the historical heart of the Saanenland, owes its unique character to its narrow streets and lanes, lined with old timber houses. GSTAAD

Gstaad village, at the elevation of 3,400 feet above sea level, is the region's main attraction, combining style, Swiss Gemütlichkeit — a state or feeling of warmth, friendliness, and good cheer, much like Danish “hygge” and tradition in a delightful way. TURBACH

Turbach is on the edge of the large ski area of ​​Gstaad Mountain Rides. At 4,300 feet, the idyllic side valley of Gstaad offers romantic summer and winter hikes, bike tracks, and cross-country trails. Gstaad and the surrounding ski areas can be reached in a matter of minutes. Just opposite the village is the famous and steepest slope in the entire ski area, Tiger Run on the Wasserngrat, only recommended for experienced and tenacious skiers! But the actual local mountain is the Giferhorn — Gstaad's exclusive skiing mountain. The Giferhorn is one of the most popular mountains in Saanenland, be it for hiking in summer or skiing in winter, considering its summit is the highest point in the municipality of Saanen at 8,400 feet.

FEUTERSOEY

The small village of Feutersoey is part of the municipality of Gsteig on the River Saane between Gstaad and the Col du Pillon i.e., Glacier 3000. Surroundings boast many lakes and beautiful hiking areas. In winter, the village is the starting point for ski tours and the destination for many off-piste skiers. In the summer, challenging mountain bike routes start from here.

LAUENEN

The romantic mountain village of Lauenen, set at a 4,000-foot altitude, consists of old timber houses and a beautiful church testifying to an awareness of tradition. The chalet village is part of the nature reserve on Lake Lauenen, featuring impressive waterfalls, glaciers, and upland moors. Lake Lauenen is regarded as a place of great energy. The village and lake are even immortalized in a song that has become one of the Swiss folk music classics.

GSTEIG

The village of Gsteig (4,000 feet), is under Cultural Heritage Protection. Center chalets dating back to the 15th to 18th century — lie in the deep valley of the River Saane at the Col du Pillon, framed by the Diablerets massif and the Sanetsch region. The church and the adjacent Hotel Bären are among the most photographed village scapes in Switzerland.

Head Chef and Sushi Master Tsutomu Kugota takes diners on a journey through some of Japan’s most pristine and rare ingredients and presentations. The restaurant interior, designed by Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance, incorporates antique kimonos, Alpine fir wood, accents of vermillion, and slatted wood partitions inspired by the temples of Kyoto and traditional Japanese houses. In 2005, The Zentrum Paul Klee, a museum in Bern, dedicated to the artist Paul Klee, opened its doors. Designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano the wave-shaped steel and glass structure is worth a visit all on its own. The building’s three curved “hills” and gently contoured lines blend into the surrounding rolling landscape. Enclosed by fields and a spacious park, the center provides a lovely area for walking. Paths that circle the Zentrum Paul Klee, a total of 18, are named after Klee’s masterpieces. The Zentrum features about 40% of Paul Klee’s entire pictorial oeuvre and awaits visitors at the intriguing address of “Monument im Fruchtland 3” (Monument in a Field 3). After you’ve finished viewing the exhibitions, how does a little snack sound? The Museum Café in the foyer area serves tasty refreshments and snacks. For à la carte meal, Restaurant Schöngrün offers a small but delectable selection of menu items.

TARMAK 22

Founded in 2019, Tarmak 22 exists to breathe life into the cultural landscape of the Swiss Alps. Located one floor above ground level at the Gstaad Saanen airport in Switzerland, Tarmak 22 is a 3,000-square-foot gallery bringing contemporary art to new heights. The space has been open to the public, whether they are planning to travel or not, and has been hosting a yearly program of conferences and performances. The gallery takes its name both from the tarmac on airport runways and the Saanen airport code.

GALERIE BEL-AIR FINE ART

Founded by François Chabanian, an art collector and dealer for over 30 years, the international group of galleries Bel Air Fine Art is also present in Geneva, Crans Montana, Verbier, Paris Place des Vosges, Saint-Tropez, and Pietrasanta. Bel Air Fine Art also regularly organizes prestigious exhibitions in the Middle East (United Arab Emirates, Lebanon …). PATRICIA LOW CONTEMPORARY

One of the best places to find art masterpieces among the mountain peaks. Established in Gstaad in 2005, with outposts in Geneva and St. Moritz, Patricia Low Contemporary is the leading destination for contemporary art in the famed Alpine town. The reopened gallery is designed by sought-after local architecture firm Rieder Architektur AG and situated in the center of Gstaad on the cobbled promenade. Not limited to high season, the gallery program of solo and curated exhibitions will take place throughout the year. Pieces by the likes of Jeff Koons, Damien Hirst, and even Robert Indiana populate the space owned by Patricia Low, an expert contemporary art dealer.

GAGOSIAN

Contemporary art gallery Gagosian first appeared in the town through various pop-up events back in 2018. It featured artists such as Giuseppe Penone, Andreas Gursky, Marc Newson, and Ed Ruscha to name but a few. Joining the Basel and Geneva locations, the Gstaad gallery opened along the historic promenade in the heart of the village and featured an inaugural exhibition of works by Damien Hirst on February 14, 2022.

HAUSER & WIRTH GSTAAD

Hauser & Wirth found a permanent home in Gstaad in the former chalet of Gunther Sachs, the Vieux Chalet. It has been used by the gallerists as a private space since 2015. It functions as an unorthodox setting to view art, where eclectic art hangings — works by modern masters such as Picasso, Joan Miró, and Philip Guston, combined with ones by more contemporary artists, including Rashid Johnson, Nicolas Party, and Lorna Simpson — are curated to resemble that of a collector’s home. Art exhibitions are open by appointment only. Hauser & Wirth have also presented other public art projects in the area in collaboration with the Gstaad Palace, Tarmak 22, and Casa Gstaad, such as the Jenny Holzer truism projections, the Martin Creed neons, and outdoor, large-scale sculptures by Alexander Calder or William Kentridge.

Samhart Gallery presents contemporary art in all its forms: painting, sculpture, digigraphy, customization, lithographies, and screenprints. A bold selection of artworks for all sensibilities. Besides Gstaad, Samhart galleries are spread around Switzerland in Neuchâtel and Villars-Sur-Ollon.

MENUHIN CENTER SAANEN

The Menuhin Center Saanen Association has become the bearer of the great artistic and spiritual heritage of Yehudi Menuhin. Lord Menuhin, the world-renowned violinist, conductor, educator, humanist, founder, and mentor of the Gstaad Menuhin Festival & Academy for almost 40 years, has left behind a tremendous musical and spiritual legacy. The vivid presentation in the historic Chalet Salzhüsi in the center of Saanen is intended to express thanks and recognition. In the Menuhin Center Saanen, you can expect a small but fine exhibition about Yehudi Menuhin and his work in Saanenland. Special attention is paid to his most important legacy for the region, the Gstaad Menuhin Festival and the IMMA (International Menuhin Music Academy).

OBERSIMMENTALER HEIMATMUSEUM

The Obersimmental local history museum is in a farmhouse from 1647 that has been preserved almost in its original condition. Richly furnished with antique residential and cultural assets, it bears witness to the life of the ancestors. In addition to rural and handicraft utensils, artistic works are also shown to their best advantage. The small medieval garden offers a selection of useful plants and herbs already cultivated earlier.

SAANEN LANDSCAPE MUSEUM

In 1987, the Museum Association of the Saanen Region was founded, having been given a comprehensive collection of artistic and agricultural cultural assets as a legacy. This led to the opening of the Saanen Landscape Museum. The freedom-loving subjects of the Counts of Gruyeres, who were once hunters, farmers, and loggers, became ski instructors, hoteliers, and entrepreneurs over the course of four centuries. A rich cultural heritage bears witness to the multifaceted work displayed through artifacts and other assets. With a permanent exhibition on Saaner customs and regularly changing temporary exhibitions, locals and guests are given the opportunity to see the past and present in a dignified setting.

THE MIRAGE GSTAAD

Gstaad's spellbinding natural surroundings are a wellspring for innovation and bold contemporary art projects. Such is The Mirror House or Mirage Gstaad, made by the American artist Doug Aitken as a project within the high-altitude arts festival Elevation 1049. This totally reflective pavilion sits in an idyllic meadow with its ever-changing mirror surface. Minute passings of the seasons and the drifting of clouds dramatically change the structure's appearance accounting for a genuinely unique chameleon-like entity totally foreign yet embedded within its vast Alpine surroundings. The mirrored sculpture in Gruben has experienced a real run over the past two years. The installation has become a destination for art lovers all over, regardless of age. Children, in particular, have enjoyed the mirrored walls and ceilings.

MADDOX GALLERY

Housed in a traditional Alpine chalet, Maddox Gallery has welcomed some of the world’s most prominent art collectors since it opened its doors in 2017. Situated on the main promenade, Maddox Gallery is at the heart of the relaxed and emerging art scene in this exclusive ski resort. Open seasonally for the duration of the ski season, the Gstaad outpost of the gallery is where some of the finest artworks done by the blue-chip and established artists the gallery represents are exhibited.

BALLENBERG OPEN-AIR MUSEUM

You can visit and admire more than 100 rural houses and farm buildings from all over Switzerland. Magnificent farmhouses, humble workers’ quarters, alpine huts and stalls, barns, storehouses, washhouses, and drying ovens provide architectural as well as socio-historical testimony to the everyday life and rural culture of the past. These historical buildings could not be maintained at their original location and were, therefore, carefully dismantled and transported to the museum’s 66 hectares of land to be reconstructed. Collectively they provide insight into the daily life of rural Switzerland.

You can come up and slow down in Gstaad but let’s not forget that Gstaad is the OG party spot for the rich and famous. Since 1971 the likes of Grace Kelly, Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor and Michael Jackson have made their way to the nightclub scene in the Gstaad. It is said to be the best place to party in Gstaad. The 16 Art is on one of the prettiest back roads in the village of Saanen. The Mittelgässli Nr. 16 was the former bell factory and is now home to a lovely yet trendy bar and restaurant.
