South America is an increasingly popular destination for luxury travelers, offering unique experiences and adventures that cater to the elite. From high-end shopping to extravagant dining, South America has something for everyone in search of a luxurious vacation. In this article, we will explore the latest trends in luxury travel in South America and what makes it such an attractive destination for the wealthy traveler.
Recent Study
A recent survey showed elite travelers continue to search out ever more exclusive and private options with leisure activities offering them the option to maintain a certain social distance. Here are other highlights of the survey:
Top priorities are: family activities (45% of respondents), private visits to specific places of interest (41%), private swimming pools (39%), deserted stretches of beach (32%) and remote and isolated locations away from major centers (32%).
On the other hand, only 8% of respondents planned to go on large group excursions, still reflecting a more reserved behavior among luxury tourism consumers. Daily accommodation services, such as housekeeping, are also an important demand, with more than 60% of respondents appreciating this feature.
Recovery in Central, Caribbean, and South America increased international flight arrivals by 26% during 2022, according to a report from ForwardKeys, an important tourism industry data provider.
The Attraction of Latin America
One of the factors that has contributed to the attraction of Latin American destinations to world tourism are the many places where luxury travelers can have experiences outdoors and in rural communities away from the noise of large urban centers.
The pandemic accelerated the trend of sustainable tourism and travelers are seeking experiences in nature with options for luxe accommodations. For elite travelers, the geography of Latin America has been ideal for its wide range of activities in national parks and protected areas in a wide variety of ecosystems – from deserts to mountains and lush jungles. While the industry's recovery in the region is still underway, it has proven to be a favorite for a new generation of tourists.
Casa Pombo, Cartagena, Colombia
Casa Pombo is a breathtaking historic estate and one of Cartagena's most exquisite examples of the grandeur of Spanish colonial architecture. Nestled in the very heart of the Colombian port city, this home is a stone's throw away from some of Latin America's most beloved landmarks and cultural institutions, from the Governor's Palace to Cartagena's Cathedral. The imperial history of this majestic colonial mansion dating back to the 16th century is exquisitely preserved by Casa Pombo, wonderfully capturing the vibrancy of the culture. Original Hispano-Arabesque columns line the luscious veranda, the authentic masonry abounding in classical beauty next to rustic wooden flourishes. Fifteen bedrooms can accommodate up to 32 guests.
