This question arises often, but the answer varies because each season offers unique experiences at Sheldon Chalet, Alaska's only year-round luxury chalet. Visit in the Winter for a quieter, more rugged experience, or enjoy endless adventure in the Summer under the midnight sun. Fall and Spring offer a balanced day-night cycle. If you want to see the northern lights, the best time to visit is between September and April.

Autumnal Splendor (September, October)

Autumn heralds the return of the mesmerizing aurora borealis as the celestial curtain of the midnight sun descends. The nocturnal sky is set ablaze with the brilliant illumination of the aurora and stars. At the same time, winter's first snowfall starts to shroud the vast amphitheater, accumulating over 100 feet of fresh snow annually. Winter's Majesty (November, December, January, and February)

Winter unveils Denali in its most resplendent form, showcasing prime viewing of the aurora borealis and meteorological phenomena, full moon glacier treks, cozy fireside evenings, and soothing saunas. Late morning golden sunrises bathe the multitude of peaks within the 35-square-mile Don Sheldon Amphitheater, igniting each peak with a multitude of colors that slowly fade into pastel and bronze hues as the sun sets in the late afternoon.

Vernal Equilibrium (March, April)

As the vernal equinox dawns, a perfect balance of days and nights greets us, allowing us to observe the aurora's mesmerizing waltz and explore the glistening glaciers. Winter blankets the glacier in untouched snow, beckoning to those who seek an outdoor adventure– from skiing in the backcountry to climbing deep crevasses. After your thrilling escapade, retire to the Sheldon Chalet for a rejuvenating sauna session, a delectable dinner, and a chance to witness the enchanting spectacle of the aurora.

Summertime Radiance (May, June, July, August)

During the summer solstice, enjoy days filled with glacier adventures under the midnight sun that keeps temperatures around 60°F. Darkness is rare, and the sun's warmth triggers distant, awe-inspiring avalanches on the snowy peaks. Our Chef prepares your meals with seasonal foraged ingredients like wildflowers, greens, and berries for a unique culinary experience.

SUMMER MUSHING EXPERIENCE

This experience begins with an enlightening presentation that includes information on sleds, gear and specialized clothing used in 60-below temperatures. You will meet the dogs, learn how to harness them and gain insight into the racing process. Then, enjoy a two-mile route along the stunning Jack River with a view of Denali on a clear day. When you return, spend quality time with the dogs and their puppies.

WHITE RIVER RAFTING

Complete your visit to Denali by experiencing the thrill of rafting! It is one of the easiest ways to have a feel of the wilderness. Most tours take place on the Nenana River, an Alaskan glacier-fed river with its distinctive brown color due to silt concentration.
