AREAS

Icon PlusIcon Minus

Relaxing and leisure vary in character and degree in different areas on the island. It ranges from lively Chaweng Beach on the east coast to more tranquil stretches, such as the secluded luxury of Taling Ngam on the west. Then, there is peaceful Bophut Beach, with its shops and dining next to the hubbub of Fisherman’s Village in the northern part of Samui. Closing the circle is Choeng Mon Beach and its lovely white sand bays on the tip of the island. All locations create a playground for a memorable vacation.

Choeng Mon

The island's northern tip is reserved for luxury accommodations, often facing stunning but remote beaches. Choeng Mon is a splendid series of small bays on the northeastern coast. Despite its rapid development, it's an excellent destination for a relaxing holiday. This area is famous for providing excellent conditions for water activities, including sea kayaking, scuba diving, and snorkeling. It has two islets – Koh Fan Yai and Noi – lying a few hundred meters offshore. The best snorkeling spots are toward both ends of the main beach and between the islands. Besides Choeng Mon, other northern areas include Plai Laem and Bangrak.

Mae Nam

Mae Nam is known for its seven-kilometer stretch of white sand beach enshrouded by coconut trees. Mae Nam means river, "Mae" means mother, and "Nam," means water. Maenam is a working village with a genuine local environment focused on a more traditional lifestyle. The excellent beach – Maenam – is idyllic, with soft white sand bordered with plenty of greenery, and is considered one of the best swimming beaches on the island. A recently constructed road connecting Maenam with Lamai over the mountain interior gives a traffic-free taste of rural life away from the beaches, passing the odd farm but mostly uninhabited on this scenic half-hour journey. You will find some excellent restaurants in the center of the village. Expats from around the globe have opened their restaurants and cafés here, serving both Thai and International cuisine. At the west end of the beach, there is the pier dock hosting fast catamaran services to and from Koh Phangan, Koh Tao, and the Surat Thani mainland. In general, it is a serene area with easy access to entertainment.

Bangrak

Bang Rak is in the north, one of the island's most densely populated and lively areas. The village runs parallel to the beach of the same name, which translates to “Village of Love.” The golden 40-foot-high statue of Big Buddha, one of the top tourist spots, majestically sits on its own island at the east end of the beach. The village is close to Ko Samui International Airport and is home to Bang Rak Pier, commonly known as Big Buddha Pier. Ferries depart from here to Ko Pha-ngan, Ko Tao, and Surat Thani. It has a good infrastructure, but it's quite busy.

Chaweng

In the island's northeast corner sits this picturesque tourist oasis nestled in a bay on the east coast, flanked by the hillside. It's Ko Samui's busiest hub, famous for its beautiful 4.5-mile beach and vibrant nightlife. It's also home to the island’s most extensive shopping complex and a fantastic range of activities, attractions, and restaurants. The beach is most people’s idea of paradise, with nodding palm trees surrounding numerous resorts. Since it is easily accessible, it gets super busy during peak season. However, the water at the beach's northern end is entirely transparent and feels nothing short of paradise with its powdery white sands.

Bo Phut

The area of Bophut is in the north, between Bang Rak and Mae Nam, and is considered a good compromise between the hustle and bustle of the larger towns on the east coast and the more tranquil setting of the south and west coasts. It is one of the few places on Samui that has retained some of the island's original Thai-Chinese atmosphere, being one of the first places where fishermen of Chinese descent landed in their discovery of the island of Samui. Besides a Chinese influence, the village also has a French "twist" to it, as it was one of the last French outposts during the French colonization of Indochina. Quaint, wooden shops/houses, stretching about half a mile down the main street bordering the beach, have been sympathetically restored and converted into boutiques, elegant restaurants, open-side coffee houses, yoga studios, art displays, and English-style pubs with live music creating a very eclectic atmosphere. The traditional and charming core of Bophut, known as the Fisherman's Village, is on the east side of the beach. Hills above the village hide fully-staffed luxury villa accommodations with amazing views. A 9-hole golf course is also located in the hills, with stunning views of the sea and the neighboring island of Koh Phangan.

Bang Por

The north coast finishes at Bang Po, or Bang Por, where new villas are isolated and inaccessible. Once a sleepy fisherman’s village, Bang Por has quickly become one of the most sought-after locations. Stretching along the island's northern coast, Bang Por never gets overcrowded, giving visitors the feeling of serenity and seclusion. Overlooking Koh Phangan and Ang Thon National Marine Park, Bang Por provides impressive views of the postcard splendid Gulf of Thailand and fantastic towering limestone cliff islets covered with lush vegetation. Even though tourist activity is rather low-key, a relaxed and bountiful holiday is guaranteed. The village is home to several authentic Thai restaurants and international cafes; the splendid, uncrowded beach belted with azure waters, holistic spas, and numerous high-end villa accommodations complete the picture. Bang Por is on the northwest coast, midway between Maenam and Nathon, and covers quite a large area. Two main beaches within this area are a length of 2.5 miles, stretching from Ban Tai in the east to Bang Po in the west.

Nathon

Nathon is the main administrative center on the west coast, where local government offices and the state hospital are situated, and the main car ferry port, where the ferry and fast catamarans leave for the mainland and the islands. Long ago, Nathon was one of the places where the first Chinese migrants landed and settled, and you will still see the Chinese influence in some areas of the town, as there is also a Chinese Temple just off the main road.

Lamai

This eastern resort town, south of Chaweng Beach, has a similar sense of the place as its northern neighbor but on a smaller scale. Like Chaweng, its nightlife is still a significant draw, and plenty of great dining, entertainment, and accommodation options exist. Lamai has long stretches of powdery sand beach and clear, calm water, great for swimming all year on the southern part of the beach. The beach has a wealth of activities to try, such as jet skiing, a children's water park, and even the jet lev/jet pack water experience. Like its neighbor Chaweng, the area attracts young travelers looking to enjoy a party vibe, but this is mainly concentrated in the central part of Lamai Town. For the ultimate relaxation, head to one of the famous luxury spas like Tamarind Springs or enjoy a round of golf at the Royal Samui Golf and Country Club.

Talig Ngam

Taling Ngam (translated as "beautiful shore") is an area in the southwest, with its picturesque coastline known as the Virgin Coast and the village where time seems to have stood still. Roaming around Taling Ngam is extremely pleasant. Not only are the landscape and coast stunning, but the lack of development also lets you discover a more genuine side of the island. Taling Ngam has attracted high-end resorts and the development of a few private luxury villas that sit elevated above the beaches on a small headland between two bays.

Lipa Noi

Lipa Noi is on the west coast, just 2.5 miles south of Nathon, the commercial capital and ferry port of Koh Samui. Generally, it is a quiet rural area full of coconut plantations and mountains with waterfalls rolling down to the beach, where the palms create a green and natural border on the shore. Villas are scattered in between the palms, mostly hidden from sight. You will travel past the temple grounds and the Dusit Dhewa Samui Cultural Centre. In Tong Yang Bay is Lipa Noi’s famous ferry pier for boats to the mainland. The great attraction for many is its off–beaten–track seclusion offering peace and tranquility. Yet it is just 5 - 10 minutes away from a shop, café, or restaurant if needed.

BEACHES

Icon PlusIcon Minus

It is quite clear why the island is Thailand’s most popular destination. When it comes to the best beaches, Koh Samui abounds with options. This tropical paradise is home to more than 40 beautiful beaches. However, here are some which deserve special mention.

Chaweng

Set on the East Coast, Chaweng is known for its lovely white sand beach and excellent nightlife scene. This is one of the most popular beaches on the island and is integral to its tourism. You’ll see crowds of tourists and many locals on this spectacular three-mile beach strip. Chaweng provides a desirable spot to lounge under the sun and dip in the water. The relaxing daytime chill spot transforms into a funky party hub under the moonlight at night. It is the home of the one-stop party destination, Ark Bar Beach Club, right in the heart of it.

Coral Cove

Coral Cove is a tiny bay just south of Chaweng Noi on the east coast. It's one of the most highly recommended places to enjoy snorkeling. Cove will surely please all underwater explorers, featuring giant boulders outside and inside the water, a wide variety of corals, and abundant marine life just a few meters off the beach.

Lamai Beach

Lamai checks all the right boxes for laid-back beaches with a calming atmosphere and a blissful feel. Beyond food and drink stalls and high-end dining restaurants, Lamai boasts a far more settling and sophisticated feel than Chaweng. Luxurious resorts overlook Lamai, and the sunset is simply magnificent. It is an ideal beach for swimming when the water is not choppy, as the beach tends to experience rip currents. Although the atmosphere is low-key, one of the unique qualities of Lamai is the fire shows. You’ll see incredible professional fire spinners performing about three times a week.

Silver Beach Or Crystal Bay

Silver Beach (or Haad Thong Takhian to locals) is a true paradise north of Lamai. This spot has perfect swimming conditions, and the crystal clear waters glisten under the Thai sunshine. Grand boulders peeking out from the sea waters are spectacular. Though this beach is one of the shortest – less than a mile long – it is truly picturesque and Instagram-worthy. With almost no waves, it makes an excellent beach to unwind and absorb your surroundings. Hundreds of fish roam in the rock pools, with small patches of coral reefs all over the bay, making the area ideal for snorkeling.

Maenam

The nightlife in Maenam is as mellow as the beach itself. Without the loudness of Thai clubs, you can enjoy the sounds of the waves crashing onto the shore. This five-kilometer-long beach, famous for surfing, is on the northern coast, west of Bo Phut. The beach is near Samui’s finest golf course – Santiburi Golf and Country Club – near the Maenam Pier with ferries to Koh Tao and Koh Phangan. The beach is a perfect holiday destination for the entire family if you want to relax without the roaring sounds of bars and clubs.

Lipa Noi Beach

A truly secluded, elegant, and unspoiled beach experience can be found on Lipa Noi. To truly get the authentic experience of a pristine tropical paradise, you must venture away from resort developments and bustling markets. Although dotted by a few bungalows, luxury villas, and restaurants, the beach is relatively free from human activity. This distance from the hustle and bustle gives Lipa Noi its distinctive atmosphere of peace, tranquility, and immersion within a pristine natural wonderland. The fine white sands are plentiful along its expansive coast, free of rocks or coral. It's excellent for snorkeling, swimming, or engaging in water sports.

Bophut Beach

Home to the historic Fishermen’s Village, Bophut, some say it is the best beach on the island. The beach strip is known for its fascinating local markets, seaside resorts, and upscale restaurants. It is also one of the oldest areas. This charming beach village used to be a French outpost for migrants from China in the 17th century. Today, Chinese influences are woven into the Thai cultural fabric. The Mediterranean atmosphere here certainly makes Bophut stand out among the rest of the island’s incredible beaches. Set with a backdrop of lush palm trees, the drive along the coast takes you to Big Buddha Temple (Wat Phra Yai) with a 40-foot statue of a golden Buddha – a must-see attraction.

BEACH CLUBS

Icon PlusIcon Minus

Beach dining is certainly a popular activity for any traveler visiting the island. The best beach clubs in Koh Samui boast quite an impressive array of styles. Some resemble such venues in the Mediterranean, with mostly chillout beats and party atmospheres, whereas others have a more rustic look and feel. It gives a sense of casual exclusivity to enjoy delicious food and libations with your feet in the sand. Coastside lounges and sunny beach decks beckon relaxation and fantastic people-watching. Given the wide range of incredible places to pick from, you’ll find a place that suits your style.

Seen Beach Club Samui

The club’s restaurant serves Mediterranean, Asian, and American dishes, and with its private cabanas, it is considered one of the three best beach bars on the island. The beach club’s highlights include Saturday Sin@SEEN pool parties and Sunday family-style brunches.

Nikki Beach Club

Overlooking the crystal blue waters of Lipa Noi, the beach club at Nikki Beach Resort Koh Samui is renowned for its incredible events, food, cocktails, and unsurpassed VIP experience. Nikki is the first and original luxury beach club concept combining the elements of music, dining, entertainment, fashion, film, and art. You can relax on a sunbed and listen to music played by famous international DJs and live musicians while enjoying handcrafted signature Nikki Beach mojitos. The Nikki Beach Sunday brunch and sunset cocktails are must-dos.

Drift At The Beach

Nestled in a secluded cove with a pristine beach and azure seas, Six Senses Samui seafront restaurant, bar, and chill-out zone – Drift at the Beach. The carefree al fresco bar, a saline pool, and shaded and open spaces provide a “come-as-you-are” quiet refuge for relaxing and letting the mind drift to the sound of the waves. The poolside lounge serves unassuming, wholesome appetizers from the wood-fired oven and grill, delicious Thai and European tapas, and delectable seafood dishes with fragrant herbs and salads picked daily from the resort’s organic Farm on the Hill on the side. From the bar, mixologists experiment with hand-crafted refreshments and freshly squeezed juices.

Cocorum

A chic poolside lounge with decadent cocktails, CoCoRum emphasizes artisanal spirits and is home to Asia's only rum vault. Savor a flight of four rare and artisanal rums from Trinidad, Guyana, Venezuela, and Barbados, paired with fresh tropical fruits. The beach bar, designed by celebrated architect Bill Bensley of Bensley Design Studios, CoCoRum, is dressed up in the signature understated luxury of the Four Seasons. The laid-back ambiance at the bar creates a stylish beverage experience. Expect unparalleled service full of personality and attention to detail. The CoCoRum cocktail menu is a work of art – using slow-pressed juices, exotic house-made ingredients, and select Thai flavors, these concoctions surprise and delight the taste buds.

Chi

Chi serves modern cuisine and handcrafted cocktails, with a swim-up bar and a 25-meter saltwater infinity pool overlooking a pristine white beach. With an extensive menu offering Thai selections, pizzas, burgers, and other savory goodies, there’s something for everyone. Weekly offers include oyster platter deals, saxophone evenings, movie screenings, and “clever cocktails” afternoons.

Beach Republic Ocean Club

The Beach Republic is an elegant and stylish beachfront venue in the northern area of Lamai. It features impressive modern architecture, with both indoor and outdoor dining areas – the latter set around the swimming pool deck, with direct access to the beach. The beach club hosts special-themed events daily, with live DJs and musicians entertaining the crowd.

Karma Beach

Perfect for groups of friends or families, Karma Beach delivers on all fronts if you are looking for a laid-back venue. Designed like an oasis with unique Thai elements, it exudes unmistakable tropical vibes. Get ready for mellow lounge music at an enviable beachfront location, replete with a tempting food menu. Karma is the lounge synonymous with a luxurious and comfortable tropical sanctuary.

Coast Beach Club & Bistro

With a drink in hand and toes in the sand, Coast Beach Club & Bistro offers the ultimate relaxing experience. Nestled in the Centara Grand Beach Resort Samui, the club offers lounge seating overlooking the sea with resident DJs and live music acts providing the soundtrack to your night. Coast Beach Club & Bistro offers lunch, dinner, and a good selection of craft cocktails, wine, and beer. The warm service, farm-fresh local ingredients, and the venue’s architectural style are unmistakably Thai.

The restaurant justifies its own glowing description as being “the quintessential beach dining experience,” and it absolutely delivers on that promise, but it does so with total ease.

Supattra | Thai

Supattra Thai Dining, just off of Big Buddha Beach, is slightly different from the other restaurants on this list. The small Thai restaurant is not affiliated with any resort or retreat, and you won’t find any pre-printed menus online or on-site. Supattra is all about serving the freshest seafood, and its blackboard menu changes based on what’s locally caught that day. For all pescatarians and seafood lovers, Supattra must be on your radar.

Pass a green and silent garden dotted with minimalistic white cube accommodation, you’ll face The Page, situated by the sea. You don’t need to be a house guest to take advantage of the food at The Page. It’s on Chaweng Beach Road, a few minutes' walk south of Central Festival. The restaurant is doing sterling service, re-creating dishes from Siam’s deepest past. Take time to celebrate dishes that require skillful preparation and can’t simply be rushed by cooks, no matter how experienced.

ARTS & CULTURE

Icon PlusIcon Minus

While exploring the island and its surrounding islets will treat you to some beautiful hidden gems and several institutions that encapsulate the island's rich history. Inspired by perfect landscapes and the ever-changing blue hues of the sea, discerning travelers will want to explore all this idyllic island has to offer. Art lovers may be surprised to find a thriving art scene developing for decades. For those looking for unique artwork and hoping to add to their collection or pick up a gift for someone special, a tour of these creative galleries should be on your Koh Samui must-do list.

The Modern Thai Art Gallery

The Modern Thai Art Gallery was Koh Samui’s first art gallery. The gallery displays work from well-known artists highlighting contemporary Thai art (still life, original Buddha-inspired faces), abstracts, and custom-made-to-order portraits or reproductions. Many works are available, with reproductions making up many of the gallery’s operations. A certificate of authenticity accompanies all the paintings by the artist in residence.

Chujai Art Gallery

The Chujai Art Gallery was created by two artists dedicated to honing their craft. Chu jai roughly means to hold a good heart, full of determination. This phrase is a true reflection of both artists’ creative vibes. Fantastical, almost psychedelic paintings are showcased in the gallery.

Gallery La Fayette

Gallery La Fayette is an art studio in Chaweng that has established a reputation for its impressive reproductions and beautiful portraits and has become a staple of the Samui art scene. The selection of reproductions and original works features a mix of modern themes, classic pieces, and subjects derived from the rich Thai culture. A favorite of art collectors from all over the world, Gallery La Fayette employs a creative team of local artists whose talent can be seen on gorgeous oil canvases.

Vida Kiom – Art Gallery & Souvenirs

Located in Mae Nam, Vida Kiom is a treasured art gallery and souvenir vendor in Koh Samui. The gallery specializes in decorative paintings and sculptures and is also popular for its portrait adaptations. Artworks displayed in the gallery are all crafted by talented local artists.

Laem Sor Pagoda

The chedi at Wat Laem Sor, on the southernmost tip of the island, must be rated as one of the most spectacular attractions in the whole southern region. It’s not “golden” or covered in gold leaf, as many of the smaller images of the Buddha or other artifacts sometimes are. Instead, it’s a complex patchwork of small, pure yellow tiles. It’s on the water’s edge, stepped and layered into three or four stories topped by a futuristic pinnacle.

Wat Samret

Wat Samret temple is somewhat of a hidden gem. The atmosphere here is truly unique, an oasis of peace and relaxation. You can watch monks meditate in the shade under the old trees and enjoy the quiet ambiance there. The absolute highlight of the Wat Samret is the stone Buddha figures around a large sitting and reclining Buddhas.

Secret Buddha Garden

Deep into the woods, a secret Buddha garden stands atop the Khao Pom mountain. Constructed as a sculpture park, the secluded spot beckons travelers with its magnificent monuments and animal figurines resting in quiet solitude. As a local pious spot, Secret Buddha Garden comprises an extensive sculpture garden whose sculptures are built based on the Buddhist scriptures and is worth visiting. Although not so easy to access without 4X4, it offers mesmerizing stunning views.

Hin Ta And Hin Yai Rocks

The Hin Ta and Hin Yai rocks are Lamai Beach's most iconic geological formations. These curious geological formations resembling male and female genitals have at the source of amusing island folklore and embarrassed chuckles for centuries. Home to an intimate white sand beach, this is a lovely pit stop for midday or evening refreshment after a packed itinerary of island exploration. Impossibly clear waters display colorful marine life in all their glory, while a lush landscape of plantations and buffalo fields enchants guests with concentrated tropical beauty.

SHOPPING

As guests settle down with a refreshing concoction to toast the sunset, Samui’s avian population dazzles with the most melodic performances. To further root his artful creations in local nature, the lounge’s resident mixologist makes his own bitters using plants from the local garden and garnishes the cocktails with resort-grown fruits and herbs. With a wine list that would shame most Parisian restaurants, fairytale-like surroundings, and world-class chefs preparing bar snacks, Annatra’s Singing Bird Lounge is rightfully considered one of the best bars and restaurants.

Coco Tam X Peppina

Here is a popular and easygoing rustic beach bar with palm trees and chillout tunes in Fisherman’s Village, just outside the Wharf Samui shopping mall. It's the ideal tropical relaxation spot with beanbags on the beach, swing seats at the bar, cabanas, shishas, and a large projector screen. This beach bar is an open-air arrangement, with a neat little garden separating the venue from Bophut Beach Road on one side and only a couple of palm-thatch structures to find once you enter the well-maintained area.

The Jungle Club

This is one of the best Koh Samui bar restaurants, and it features panoramic vistas to die for from its lofty perch above Chaweng Bay. As its name suggests, it’s surrounded by jungle (or, more specifically, a coconut plantation) and offers up unrivaled views from the floor-cushioned seating on its vast rooftop deck. The journey up to Jungle Club in the venue’s jeeps is a little heart-racing, but you’ll be able to mellow out with a few well-made cocktails and music that’s just the right volume for conversation. If you are craving some sustenance, stay for dinner, and you won’t be disappointed by Jungle Club’s blend of fresh seafood dishes, fragrant curries, and tasty tapas.

Fascinating old-world traditions punctuate every season of the year, offering no shortage of activity, no matter your arrival date. Far more than a sleepy resort Island, Koh Samui dazzles with an idiosyncratic charm that transcends international borders.

Full Moon Parties

Indulge in unbridled hedonism and Dionysian excess at one of Southeast Asia's most legendary Full Moon festivals. This highly anticipated event regularly attracts tens of thousands of visitors to the white sand shores of Haad Rin. Guests of Koh Samui are a 15-minute speedboat ride away from Koh Phangan Island, which has been celebrating the lunar cycle since 1985. Few things are more typical of Thailand’s nightlife scene than the moon party. Embrace a spectacular festival ambiance before the ethereal glow of moonlit waters and dance the night away.

Songkran (Water Festival)

Soak in local folklore and fascinating Buddhist customs with the annual Songkran or Water Splashing Festival. Cheekiness and cheerfulness collide in a one-of-kind water-throwing festival heralding the start of a Buddhist calendar year. Described as a cross between Mardi Gras, April Fool's Day, and New Year, revelers are encouraged to bring an extra large bucket, water balloon, or a turbocharged super soaker in a cathartic ritual symbolizing the washing away of bad luck. This must-see event occurs every year between April 13 and 15, with Koh Samui offering no shortage of themed parties and Songkran celebrations sure to delight young and old.

Loy Krathong (Festival Of Lights)

Loy Krathong, or the Thai festival of lights, is undoubtedly one of Koh Samui's most beloved annual celebrations. Revel in the ethereal beauty of a sky lit by thousands of lanterns whisked away by the gentle breeze while the silent stream of a river carries these candlelit baskets downstream. A mesmerizing experience awaits as the shimmering waters reflect thousands of dancing flames into the darkness, each representing the promise of a wish. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a learned scholar of Thai folkloric traditions, Loy Krathong never ceases to enchant and inspire a sense of childlike wonder.

Makha Bucha (Buddhist Celebration)

Makha Bucha is an integral religious event marking the first major Buddhist festival of the year. Falling annually mid-way through February, this is an exceptional opportunity to immerse yourself in local tradition, whether you have a budding interest in Eastern mysticism or are inspired by the burgeoning popularity of New Age teachings. Festivities occur with local temples participating in a dazzling candlelight procession known as Wian Thian. Worshippers are receptive to the curious and may even beckon participation in giving offerings or reciting mantras.

Buffalo Fighting Festivals

When it comes to experiencing the uniqueness of Thai culture and traditions on Samui, one that springs to mind is definitely buffalo fighting – a century-old local tradition. Natives of the Island enjoy buffalo fighting shows, and it’s the most popular pastime of the residents. Compared to other animal sports, the animals here don’t actually injure themselves as the activity itself is just a natural behavior buffalos exhibit in the wild. Buffalo fighting events are held on a rotating basis at one of the six arenas around Koh Samui, with walls of bamboo and coconut palm branches erected to obstruct the view of non-paying spectators. The real attraction at these events is not the fight itself, as it is the festive atmosphere.

Icon PlusIcon Minus

Traditional Thai Dancing

Classical Thai dancing has been charming its audiences for more than 500 years despite the modernity that has overflown Thailand. One of the nation’s best-known and oldest arts is classical Thai dancing. The most famous symbol – the Khon mask, although it might be familiar to many, it is still very mysterious. Khon masks come in various forms and are used in classical Thai dance along with equally elaborate clothing and ornamentation to denote the mythical characters on stage. There are demons, monkeys, royal figures, soldiers, and a whole cast of epic characters; these are not masks to disguise but to identify. They’re as much part of the dance as the dancing itself. Thai dancing, which originates from the Ramayana epic from India, provides an intricate mix of poetry, epic drama, complicated music, and highly ritualized choreography to produce a unified art form that’s hard to find elsewhere outside Thailand and its neighboring regions. The ancient Siamese culture lives on, and its traditions are alive and kicking.

Discover the ins and outs of rum production in a gorgeous distillery embraced by lush gardens replete with aromatic jackfruit groves.
